ORANGE COUNTY, CA — The OC Animal Care shelter in Tustin is currently housing more than double its maximum capacity for animals, and Orange County residents can help this overcrowding in a big way by saving the date for a special adoption event coming this Saturday.

The inaugural Animal Adoption Day will be hosted by Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley in partnership with OC Animal Care on Saturday.

“Animal shelters across the County are over capacity, including OC Animal Care in Tustin,” Supervisor Foley said in a news release. “This shelter has capacity for about 200 dogs and 300 cats, but currently houses more than double its max capacity of animals. By hosting Animal Adoption Day, we hope to encourage the public to adopt, foster, or volunteer with our County shelters to support our region’s homeless pets.”

During the event, residents can walk into the shelter to meet all of the pooches in search of home. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., a drive-through pet food pantry will provide free food and necessities to those in need. From 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., the shelter will hold "Pooches on the Patio," a volunteer-led dog meet-and-greet event.

In addition, adoption fees will be waived from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., making it easier than ever to bring a sweet pup home.

According to a news release, the announcement of the event launches a month-long, first-come first-serve initiative where Supervisor Foley's office will waive adoption fees for up to 200 pets.

“Thank you to Supervisor Foley for hosting this event and encouraging our community to opt to adopt their new best friend from OC Animal Care,” OC Animal Care Director Andi Bernard said in a statement. “Our shelter is facing a staffing shortage while caring for over 900 animals through our shelter and foster programs. With waived adoption fees, free starting supplies for each adopting family, and the drive-thru pet food pantry, we invite community members to join us so we can connect hundreds of cats and dogs with their forever families.”

The inaugural Animal Adoption Day takes place Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at OC Animal Care, 1630 Victory Rd, Tustin.
