LONG BEACH, CA — Development company Trammel Crow Residential recently purchased nearly six acres of land in downtown Long Beach for a project that may set a new city record for tallest building, according to reports.

The national developer purchased the property located at the corner of Golden Avenue and West Broadway from the Port of Long Beach for $29.5 million, according to property records. the deal for the multi-family project, named Westside Gateway, closed on Sept. 1.

"Historically a neighborhood of smaller structures, this site was cleared for the construction of the World Trade Center and adjacent hotel and parking lots in the 1980s," a statement from Studio One Eleven, the architectural company designing the project, said. "This project seeks to break down the megablock, reintroducing the historical street grid and bringing housing, live-work, and retail spaces to round out a vibrant, mixed-use district."

Currently, Long Beach's tallest building is the 35-story luxury apartment tower Ledcor's Shoreline Gateway on Ocean Boulevard.

The over 1 million square feet mixed-use property will include two residential towers, the taller of them proposed to be 40 stories tall, four smaller residential buildings, a parking structure and a market for residents.
